Good News from the Sea

I have a reason to be cheerful!

The sea.

The great leveller, teacher and escape. A true constant.

And do you know what makes me even more cheerful?

The sea is there for all of us, always.

We live on 30% of the earth’s surface, the other 70% is a vast, widely undiscovered and awe inspiring oasis… the sea.

The sea, the great unifier, is man's only hope.

Now, as never before, the old phrase has a literal meaning:

we are all in the same boat.

I’m Ellie, I’m hugely passionate about the big blue and have been lucky enough to spend my life in, on and focussed around the sea. I’m an environmental educator and outdoor instructor as well as a graphic designer and shop assistant.

I’ve recently started a podcast ‘Good News From The Sea’ it’s been slightly scary as it is the first time I have ever properly worked on a project like this without the backing of an organisation or charity. I’m constantly finding myself feeling a little bit embarrassed when I realise I’ve spent another day sat in my room talking about squids to myself.

But, despite my initial embarrassment I’m now proud to release this very unpolished project into the world.

The aim of the podcast is simple: Spread happy, interesting and curious news with people while staying happy, interested and curious myself.

While studying Graphic Design we often learnt about the persuasive power of communications, we focussed on propaganda from wars and adverts selling us things. A lot of the communications we see daily are very negative or have an ulterior motive.

Imagine if all communications sent out to the human race were specifically made to make us feel cheerful?

Of course sadness and feeling sad is a part of life, yet I wonder how much of it is pushed on us by outside influences?

In short, my ramble concludes the reason I started to make ‘Good News From The Sea’. As a designer and educator maybe I have a duty to produce content that will make people feel happy, and I really do hope that this podcast will bring a little smile to your face.
